A little bit of background on the local Pacific City area. |
|
Pacific City Oregon is one of the most visually attractive places on the oregon coast. Once inhabited by a local indian population the Nestugga indians who once camped along what is now the Big Nestucca River. Before the settlers began arriving to the Nestucca Valley and Pacific City it was populated by Indian Tribes of the Nestuggas and the Killamooks (note the name origin of the Nestucca River and Tillimook). The origional name of Haystack Rock is said to be "Chief Kiawanda Rock" named after a very well known Chief of the Nestugga Tribe from the early 1800's. The Tribes of the Pacific City area were inevitably moved from there homes to a reservation on the Salmon and Siletz River. By the late 1800's early pioneers began to settle along the Nestucca River and Pacific City. Travel to the area became easier when a road from Grand Rhode to the Nestucca Valley was completed. Fishing, logging, and eventually Dairy Farming, became the primary occupations in the area. Because of the unique location near both river and ocean, it became the focus of recreation which still stands today. Fishing and surfing are the primary focus of vacationers to the pacific City Area today. Many old timers in town, along with some long time visitors, claim Pacific City has changed alot during the last 40 years. However, compared to other coastal towns, it remains a relatively undeveloped quaint village and has retained everything that originally attracted early settlers and visitors. Pacific City is still unincorperated and has no mayor or city council. Picific City has a long history and a bright future. |
