About us

The Kiwanda Surf Company first opened its doors for business in May 2003 in Pacific City Oregon. Kiwanda Surf Co. is owned and operated by Joel Talbert.  The store was created as a result of Joel’s passion for the ocean and surfing. He grew up surfing the beaches of sunny Southern California and first came to Oregon with his father in 1988.  Joel was in awe of the rustic beauty and un-crowded waters that Oregon had to offer.  As a kid, Joel would hang out in surf shops and ponder what a cool job this would be.  He loved everything about being in the surf shops, from the smell of wetsuit neoprene and surfboard wax, to watching surf videos on the tube. 

Joel saw Oregon as the last frontier for surfing and surf shop possibilities.  The dream of one day owning his own store seemed possible. From there it was about finding the right location, a name, and affordable real estate for the endeavor.  He found a quaint building for sale in Pacific City, knowing that it would soon become the most popular surf spot on the Oregon Coast. He was confident that his business would be successful.

Joel gives surfing lessons, makes custom surfboards, and board bags and thoroughly enjoys every aspect of being involved in the surf industry.

Our Services

Have you always wanted to give surfing a try?  Surfing is  one of the fastest growing extreme sports among men and women.  We provide individual and group surf lessons at beautiful Cape Kiwanda!  Our instructors have a passion for surfing that translates into a friendly delivery of basic skills for all levels of surfers (especially first-timers!) – 99% of our students are standing on waves in their first lessons…..this could be you!

We shape our own surfboards in addition to the brands we already carry – give us a call and we can shape a custom surfboard for you!

We have an on-site shaper with quality dig repair skills.

We custom make all of our surfboard bags.  Our surfboard bags are epic!  You ask and we deliver! We use only the highest quality materials. The outsides are made of 10-ounce UV treated silver tarpaulin material for the best reflection of sunlight available in a surfboard bag.  The insides are nylon pack cloth covering ¼ inch closed cell foam to provide your surfboard with the ultimate protection.  We also use the largest YKK zipper - the best in the industry.  Are you looking for a quality surfboard bag, but can’t find one that properly fits your surfboard? You provide the specs and within a few days you will have the best protection available for your surfboard…and pay less than what you see for most name brands!  Surfboard bags make excellent gifts as well!  Give us a call – we can ship your order throughout the United States.

In addition to surfboards, we sell Wave Rebel bodyboards, Victoria and Body Glove skim boards, and Hotline wetsuits, booties, and accessories – the highest quality and most comfortable wetsuit available!!


Our  Rentals

A surf shop wouldn’t be a surf shop without surfboard and accesories rentals.  Our quality rental equipment includes: surfboards, bodyboards, skim boards, wetsuits, hoodies, bootie, and fins. We have nice surfboard rentals from 6 feet – 10 feet long.   We also have kayaks for rent…..great for paddling the Nestucca River!
